Thunder Give Update on Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace Injuries
Both players are expected to miss several months after surgery, leaving Oklahoma City without two starters and thinning a defense already under pressure.
General manager Sam Presti announced Monday that guard Jalen Williams will undergo surgery for a dislocated left ankle and fractured fibula, while guard Cason Wallace will have surgery for a torn labrum in his left shoulder.
Both players sustained injuries during Sunday's 108-101 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, with Williams hurt late in the fourth quarter on a drive and Wallace colliding with center Isaiah Jackson in the first quarter.
Williams is in the first season of a five-year, $239 million maximum contract, while Wallace signed a five-year, $139 million extension last week; both players are expected to miss several months.
"We'll wrap our arms around these guys," Presti said Monday, adding that the organization is working through medical information and remains optimistic about recovery for both players.
These injuries compromise the Thunder's defensive depth, removing two key perimeter defenders; Oklahoma City has access to trade exceptions totaling $17.8 million and $15 million to address roster gaps.
The Houston Rockets, Oklahoma City Thunder and Memphis Grizzlies are the only teams to have won four straight games in the NBA season opener. The Grizzlies defeated the Utah Jazz 110-105 on the road, the Rockets defeated the Atlanta Hawks 120-110 at home, and the Thunder defeated the Phoenix Suns 125-114.
