Ohio police officer fatally shot responding to 911 gunshots call, suspect and 2 others also dead
A state investigation is underway after a 911 response turned deadly, leaving one officer dead, two officers injured and three other people killed.
On Sunday night, a shooting in Rittman, Ohio, left four people dead, including a police officer, according to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Two other officers and a K-9 unit sustained injuries during the incident.
Authorities responded to a 911 call regarding a disturbance at a home near North Metzger Avenue and Saurer Street around 9:30 p.m. Upon arrival, responding officers "immediately started taking fire," Wayne County Sheriff Tom Ballinger said.
Law enforcement found the suspect dead inside the home along with two other victims. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is now leading the inquiry into the shooting, according to Ballinger.
The incident prompted a massive law enforcement response that locked down a portion of Rittman. Other area departments moved to stage in the south side of the county to assist with ongoing calls.
Rittman, a city of roughly 6,100 residents, spans the border of Wayne and Medina counties in northeast Ohio. State investigators remain on the scene Monday morning to process the area and continue the investigation.
