Ohio man charged with luring Manitoba child online: RCMP
U.S. authorities say devices seized in Ohio contained evidence of communication with a Manitoba child, and investigators believe there may be additional victims.
- On Feb. 12, U.S. Homeland Security agents arrested Courtney Arden Wise III in Wadsworth, Ohio, after Manitoba RCMP alerted them to the luring of a 10-year-old girl on social media.
- Investigators with the Manitoba RCMP internet child exploitation unit learned of these "heinous" crimes in December after a family member discovered messages and reported them.
- Electronic devices seized during the Feb. 12 raid in Wadsworth contained "evidence of communication" with the Manitoba child, after the suspect allegedly posed as a teenage boy.
- "This incident was a terrible reminder of the dangers that lurk on the internet," Cpl. Clements said at a Winnipeg news conference on Monday, noting police arrests in several luring cases this year.
- Statistics Canada reported 3,927 online sexual offences against children in 2024, with luring accounting for 74 per cent of cases at a rate of 52 incidents per 100,000 children.
