Ohio man charged with luring Manitoba child online: RCMP
U.S. authorities say devices seized in Ohio contained evidence of communication with a Manitoba child, and investigators believe there may be additional victims.
On Feb. 12, U.S. Homeland Security agents arrested Courtney Arden Wise III in Wadsworth, Ohio, after Manitoba RCMP alerted them to the luring of a 10-year-old girl on social media.
Investigators with the Manitoba RCMP internet child exploitation unit learned of these "heinous" crimes in December after a family member discovered messages and reported them.
Electronic devices seized during the Feb. 12 raid in Wadsworth contained "evidence of communication" with the Manitoba child, after the suspect allegedly posed as a teenage boy.
"This incident was a terrible reminder of the dangers that lurk on the internet," Cpl. Clements said at a Winnipeg news conference on Monday, noting police arrests in several luring cases this year.
Statistics Canada reported 3,927 online sexual offences against children in 2024, with luring accounting for 74 per cent of cases at a rate of 52 incidents per 100,000 children.
