Potentially Historic Winter Storm to Slam Much of the US with Destructive Ice and Heavy Snow

Half an inch or more of ice is forecast over parts of 19 states, risking widespread power outages and hazardous travel conditions, National Weather Service said.

  • Forecasters said the system will begin Friday and continue through the weekend, bringing heavy snow, freezing rain, sleet, and a half-inch or more of ice across Plains, South and Northeast regions including Washington, D.C.; New York City; Boston; and Philadelphia.
  • An atmospheric river of moisture will pull Gulf moisture northward across Texas and the Southeast as an Arctic cold invasion arrives Thursday into Friday, pushing temperatures more than 30 degrees below average in the Midwest and Plains.
  • An estimated 100 million people were under watches or advisories Wednesday, with parts of at least 19 states including Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana under winter storm watches.
  • Major travel disruption and possible long-lasting power outages are expected, with major U.S. hub airports Dallas-Fort Worth, Atlanta, Memphis, Tennessee, and Charlotte, North Carolina facing delays.
  • State and local officials have mobilized crews and equipment ahead of the storm, including Georgia Governor Brian Kemp's seven-day emergency and Texas Governor Greg Abbott's state emergency activation with 1,000-plus winter machines deployed.
