Officials urge Calgarians to save water, take shorter showers after water main break
Calgary implements Stage 4 water restrictions and boil-water advisories after Bearspaw South Feeder Main rupture affects 60% of the city’s water supply, officials said.
- On Dec. 30 the Bearspaw South Feeder Main ruptured near Canada Olympic Park, and Jeromy Farkas, Calgary Mayor, said the line remains `very much in the red zone` while Chris Huston urged 1.6 million people to use below 485 million litres daily.
- After a June 2024 rupture, officials say the Bearspaw South Feeder Main has failed repeatedly, including a second major break in less than two years, and Michael Thompson said it is not clear why.
- Flooding on 16 Avenue N.W. sent water onto highway lanes and flooded streets, crews report buckled roads near Sarcee Trail and rescued 13 people from eight vehicles, while over 3,000 homes in Montgomery, Parkdale and Point McKay face boil‑water advisory.
- Officials advised Calgarians to follow Stage 4 restrictions pausing outdoor water use, save 10 to 30 litres daily with three‑minute showers and full loads, but Nicole Newton noted no `measurable reduction` yet.
- City officials pledged to fix the Bearspaw South Feeder Main, which supplies about 60 per cent of Calgary, with a technical briefing scheduled Thursday at 2 p.m., while New Year’s events will proceed.
