ECOWAS Backs Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Project
The 6,800-kilometer project could carry 30 billion cubic meters of gas a year and link regional markets to Europe, officials said.
- On Sunday in Freetown, Sierra Leone, the Economic Community of West African States signed an Intergovernmental Agreement approving the Nigeria-Morocco African Atlantic Gas Pipeline .
- Launched as a strategic initiative by His Majesty King Mohammed and the late Muhammadu Buhari, the project enjoys continued support from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu; ONHYM and NNPC Ltd jointly develop the pipeline.
- Estimated at approximately $25 billion, the nearly 6,800 kilometers infrastructure will transport up to 30 billion cubic meters of gas annually from Nigeria through 13 West African countries to Morocco and the European gas network.
- The agreement facilitates the next implementation phase, establishing a Project Company in Casablanca and a Pipeline Higher Authority in Abuja to manage investor mobilization and prepare the Final Investment Decision .
- Beyond its energy dimension, the infrastructure serves as a development corridor to strengthen regional integration, with a dedicated ceremony in Morocco scheduled for the Kingdom and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania to jointly sign the agreement.
