Officer shot during traffic stop in NH; suspect dead, AG says
On Monday night, an Ashland Police Department traffic stop on Main Street turned deadly, leaving one officer wounded and an adult male suspect dead after a shootout, New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella announced.
Ashland police conducted a stop when the driver allegedly produced a gun, prompting an exchange of gunfire that New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit investigators are currently processing.
The wounded officer is being treated at an area hospital in good condition, while investigators are seeking body camera and cruiser footage; witness Vickie Jacobson reported seeing "lots of activity" at the scene.
Following formal interviews and next-of-kin notification, authorities will release the identities of the officer and deceased man, with an autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner scheduled at a later date.
This shooting follows a recent string of fatal police encounters across New Hampshire and Massachusetts, which have raised scrutiny regarding how law enforcement responds to individuals in distress during medical emergencies.
