Off-duty ICE agent shot after assaulting 72-year-old man and his daughter at Fresno home, police say
Police say the agent appeared intoxicated before attacking two people, and the 72-year-old homeowner shot him in fear for their safety.
On Friday morning, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent David Gonzalez was shot in Fresno after allegedly assaulting two residents at a home near East Dudley and North Broadway.
The incident began before 3:30 am when a resident discovered Gonzalez sleeping on her front lawn; after she alerted her 72-year-old father, police say the intoxicated agent attacked them both.
As the daughter attempted to protect her father, the elderly man shot the federal agent to ensure their safety; the woman's boyfriend, an off-duty police officer, subsequently placed Gonzalez in handcuffs.
Gonzalez remains in serious condition at a local hospital and is in custody for felony assault, while police confirmed the 72-year-old resident is not currently facing charges for the shooting.
Investigators are working to determine why the Texas-based agent was in the Tower District neighborhood, as the Fresno Police Department continues its ongoing probe into the early Friday altercation.
