Odisha Floods Intensify, 2.37 Lakh Evacuated as Rivers Inundate Northern Districts

Authorities have opened 293 relief camps and deployed 90 rescue teams as rivers overflow and flood damage spreads across northern districts.

  • On Sunday, the Odisha government sounded a high alert across the State following an IMD forecast of extremely heavy rainfall prompted by a fresh low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.
  • Fresh flooding has affected 5.15 lakh people in 947 villages under 331 gram panchayats, prompting the IMD to issue a 'Red warning' for the entire State.
  • Around 90 rescue teams, including 36 ODRAF, seven NDRF, and 47 Fire Services teams, have deployed to vulnerable areas while the State evacuated 2.37 lakh people to 293 relief camps.
  • Secretary Anu Garg directed district collectors to remain on high alert while three senior IAS officers were dispatched to Balasore, Bhadrak, and Jajpur to coordinate relief operations.
  • The well-marked low-pressure area will likely concentrate into a depression during the next 24 hours as the IMD forecasts very heavy rain for three days through August 18.
