Chinese-Style EV Battery Swap Stations Are Coming to Europe
The venture plans hubs that can service thousands of trucks a day and aims to support more than 300,000 electric trucks.
Octopus Energy and CATL announced a new joint venture today at the Energy Tech Summit in London, aiming to build a network of battery-swapping hubs for electric trucks across the UK and Europe.
Dr. Robin Zeng, Chairman and CEO of CATL, said the technology has been "field-proven" in China and will now bring battery swapping to Europe as "a significant part of the future of commercial transport."
Octopus Energy Group founder and CEO Greg Jackson explained that drivers replace depleted cells in minutes: "You can give a truck 500 kWh of electricity, but you took it from the grid when the grid was empty."
Swaptopus plans to open the first UK "mega hubs" in 2027, with more than 30 planned by 2035, supporting over 300,000 electric trucks and unlocking more than £30 billion once in full operation.
William Rowe, CEO of the Swaptopus joint venture, says battery stations can charge cells "when the grid needs it" as the two companies explore vehicle-to-grid technology expansion through CATL's global automotive partnerships.
Instead of charging, they would offer robotic battery replacement, but the question is to what extent this could make the entire European market dependent on them.
The Chinese CATL, the world's largest manufacturer of electric vehicle batteries, plans to install more than 30 battery exchange stations for trucks in Europe by 2035.
