'Welcome to Mordor': Resort Owner Says Massive Tongariro Blaze a 'Hellscape'
Firefighters use eight helicopters and three planes to contain the fire after overnight growth, evacuating 49 hikers, Fire and Emergency New Zealand reported.
- On Nov 9, Fire and Emergency New Zealand said firefighters resumed battling a wildfire that has burned through around 1,100 hectares in Tongariro National Park.
- Because the fire grew overnight, firefighting was paused for safety, and an aerial reconnaissance on Sunday will confirm the blaze's extent and inform control efforts.
- Fire and Emergency New Zealand mobilised ground and air assets, deploying eight helicopters, three planes, six fire trucks, five tankers, six helicopters, and two fixed-wing aircraft on Sunday.
- Evacuations included around 40 hikers being airlifted and nine hikers evacuated on Sunday morning, while there are no reports of damaged structures, a Department of Conservation spokesperson said.
- Because of the terrain and extent of the fire, air attack is more effective at this stage than bringing in additional ground crews across most of the fireground, Fire and Emergency New Zealand assistant commander Craig Gold said.
