NYC Ballot Measure Results Are in: All Props Pass

Unofficial results show support for measures that would speed outdoor dining permits, bike lane approvals and city contracting.

  • New York City voters approved all five charter amendments on Tuesday, aimed at streamlining government processes from outdoor dining permits to street safety projects. Mayor Zohran Mamdani's 15-member Commission on Government Efficiency developed the measures.
  • After hosting public hearings across the five boroughs, COGE heard testimony from over 1,000 New Yorkers during summer consultations. Mamdani established the panel to recommend changes to the city's governing structure.
  • Supporters argued the measures would increase efficiency, while Common Cause New York warned that efficiency should "not come at the expense of public participation and legislative oversight." Voters passed all measures with over 60% support.
  • Most changes take effect March 1, 2027, simplifying outdoor dining permits and city contracts. The outdoor dining measure, which passed with 63.2% of the vote, aims to reduce approval times from eight months to about two months.
  • Despite the results, controversies persist over a $1.6 million ad campaign Mamdani used to promote the proposals. Critics continue to argue that reducing public hearings limits accountability, though implementation targets 2030.
