N.Y. Gov. Kathy Hochul declares state of emergency for nor'easter expected to bring blizzard conditions
Gov. Hochul activated 100 National Guard troops and imposed travel bans as the blizzard could drop up to 2 feet of snow with winds over 60 mph, officials said.
- On Saturday, a state of emergency was declared across 22 counties, including NYC and Long Island, as Hochul warned of worsening conditions, saying, 'We received word that it's even worse than we expected.'
- The National Weather Service issued blizzard and winter storm warnings for much of southeast New York from Sunday morning to Monday afternoon, forecasting heavy snow, whiteouts and winds gusting up to 60 mph risking dangerous travel.
- Hochul activated 100 New York National Guard members with 25 vehicles, and officials imposed vehicle restrictions including a travel ban from 9 p.m. Sunday to 9 a.m. Monday, across I-84 and bridges.
- The MTA plans to run most subways local, deploy 35 specialized snow-fighting vehicles, and use de-icer trains to protect 220 miles of exposed outdoor tracks.
- Authorities cautioned residents to enable emergency alerts by texting their county or borough name to 333111 and warned travel could become 'dangerous to impossible' late Sunday through Monday morning.
