Nvidia Unveils AI Models for Faster, Cheaper Weather Forecasts

Nvidia's Earth-2 models reduce supercomputing needs by 50% and enable faster, more accurate forecasts, expanding access for governments and smaller countries, officials said.

  • On Monday at the American Meteorological Society meeting in Houston, Nvidia Corp. launched two open-source models, Earth-2 Medium Range and Earth-2 Nowcasting, alongside a Global Data Assimilation model.
  • Amid a shift in forecasting methods, AI-based forecasting models identify atmospheric patterns rather than simulating physics, and data assimilation consumes roughly 50% of traditional supercomputers' loads, Nvidia says lowering barriers helps developers and smaller countries build tools.
  • On the hardware side, the Earth-2 Medium Range model was trained on 32 80GB A100/H100 GPUs up to a 3.3 billion-parameter variant, and one H100 GPU runs inference in under a second using less than 20GB of memory.
  • National services and private companies note CorrDiff and FourCastNet3 are operational, the Israeli Meteorological Service plans eight daily Nowcasting runs, and The Weather Company and Total Energies evaluate Nowcasting.
  • Nvidia asserts Earth-2 Medium Range outperforms Google DeepMind's GenCast on more than 70 variables while GenCast was released in December 2024; earlier CoreDiff downscales forecasts up to 500 times faster using GPU-based inference vs supercomputers.
