Nvidia Teases DLSS 5 and Gamers Aren't Impressed

Nvidia’s DLSS 5 uses AI to understand 3D game elements for faster, more realistic graphics but faces criticism for altering artistic visuals, developers retain control.

  • On Tuesday, CEO Jensen Huang unveiled Nvidia's DLSS 5 at the GTC conference, introducing AI-powered 3D upscaling technology. The new version shifts from processing pixels to understanding 3D elements for improved performance and realistic lighting.
  • Nvidia confirmed Monday that titles including Starfield and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered will support the technology. DLSS 5 deconstructs characters into components like skin and hair to generate more consistent, realistic details.
  • Following the announcement, gamers called the visuals "AI slop" or "yassified." YouTuber The Sphere Hunter said on Monday, "Everything about this is a betrayal of these game's artistry," criticizing filtered, handcrafted art replacement.
  • Addressing the controversy on Tuesday, Huang stated DLSS 5 "enhances and adds generative capability, but it doesn't change the artistic control." Bethesda added the effect remains "totally optional for players" and under artists' control.
  • Digital Foundry called the tech "disruptive and transformative," noting images "looked a little bit uncanny" but character portrayal is sophisticated. Nvidia plans to release a list of supported GPUs closer to the fall launch.
