Sydney Public Transport’s $820m Overhaul
The overhaul will add digital cards, real-time service data and weekly fare caps for 1 million customers, the state government said.
- On Tuesday, the New South Wales government announced an $820 million overhaul of the Opal public transport ticketing system, dubbed Opal 2.0, to modernize technology and improve service reliability across Sydney's networks.
- Transport Minister John Graham stated the existing system, built on 30-year-old London Oyster technology, has remained unchanged for 13 years and struggles with "phantom buses" that fail to arrive as scheduled.
- German-Headquartered INIT Pty Ltd will deliver the new ticketing system, while Trapeze Group designs 5,000 information screens and contractors install 25,000 new Opal readers across rail, metro, bus, light rail and ferries.
- Passengers will gain a new Opal app with real-time tracking and automatic fare adjustments, while NSW Transport Secretary Josh Murray noted these changes simplify the "complicated ticketing system" with digital compensation for overcharges.
- Tech development begins this year, followed by hardware installation next year, with the full facelift scheduled to finish in 2028; the New South Wales government maintains the project remains within budget despite an extra $82 million allocation.
