NSCDC Uncovers 'University' Operating From 3-Bedroom Apartment in Lagos, Rescues 106
NSCDC said the scheme charged up to N1.5 million and recruited youths from several states and neighboring countries through online promises of foreign admission.
- Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps uncovered a suspected fake university operating from a three-bedroom apartment in Ilado, Lagos State on Monday, rescuing 106 youths after days of intelligence gathering and covert surveillance.
- The National Universities Commission had previously warned of 58 illegal universities operating as 'degree mills' across Nigeria, yet the suspected institution operated without official registration while presenting itself online as a distance-learning centre affiliated with a foreign university.
- Victims aged 19 to 24 from Kogi and Oyo states, with some from Niger, Cameroon and Togo, paid admission fees ranging from N200,000 to N1.5 million, while foreign nationals paid $400 to $500 under a Ponzi-style recruitment model promising increasing commissions.
- Badagry Area Commander Chief Superintendent Gbenga Ekunola confirmed the arrest of the alleged proprietor, who is assisting with investigations, while the 106 youths remain in protective custody pending profiling and family reunification.
- The NSCDC has expanded investigations to identify collaborators and determine whether similar schemes operate elsewhere, as Ekunola expressed concern that many parents were unaware of their children's actual activities, warning that culpable parties face prosecution.
