British Police Say Chopper's Phallic Flight Pattern Was Unintentional

NPAS said the route was part of a search for a vehicle that failed to stop for police and was not drawn deliberately.

  • On Wednesday, the National Police Air Service denied deliberately drawing a phallic shape in the sky, stating the flight path near Fleet, Hampshire, was part of a legitimate police operation.
  • After his daughter was woken Monday night, resident Gordon Bird, 53, discovered the helicopter's route above Ancells Farm and Blackbushe Airport formed a phallic shape and was "shocked" by the finding.
  • NPAS flights "do not follow defined or predetermined flight plans" and are "dynamic and respond to ever changing, and unpredictable, circumstances on the ground" while checking "specific roads, junctions and areas."
  • Acknowledging Bird's concerns, the service told him it understood the "frustration" of his daughter being "disrupted" and called it "unfortunate" that the flight path "resembles a particular shape" on tracking apps.
  • Thames Valley Police requested the aerial support; NPAS operates across England and Wales, with the helicopter returning to its base at Redhill after the hour-long operation concluded late Monday.
