Nova Scotia's New Firefighting Aircraft Squelch Wildfire on Southwestern Shore

Water drops from four new air tankers and firefighters held a 3-hectare wildfire on Nova Scotia's southwestern coast, officials said.

  • On Wednesday night, a wildfire in Port L Hebert, Queens County, was reported out of control by the Emergency Management Department.
  • Last week, Nova Scotia signed a $6.5-million seasonal contract for four Air Tractor AT-802 air tankers and one Cessna Caravan from Forest Protection Ltd. to bolster aerial firefighting capacity.
  • Premier Tim Houston stated the province requires additional equipment because wildfire seasons are becoming more intense and unpredictable. In 2023, the province lost more than 200 homes and 22,000 people fled fires.
  • Provincial officials confirmed the fire was held back by water drops from the new air tankers, alongside crews from the Natural Resources Department and volunteer firefighters.
  • Last August, the Long Lake wildfire burned over 84 square kilometres and destroyed 20 homes in the Annapolis Valley, while the September Lake George wildfire forced the evacuation of 350 civic addresses.
