Nova Scotia Approves Gold Mining Company's Plan to Process Leftover Ore at Idled Mine
The project is expected to create about 200 jobs and add $150 million to Nova Scotia’s economy, the government said.
- On May 5, 2026, the Nova Scotia government approved Atlantic Mining Nova Scotia to process stockpiled ore at the idled Touquoy gold mine, located about 65 kilometres east of Halifax.
- Operations at the site ceased in 2023, leaving three million tonnes of unprocessed ore; Atlantic Mining reports the stockpile contains about 38,000 ounces of gold worth more than $200 million.
- Atlantic Mining has signed contracts worth $56 million with two rural firms to support the restart, which the government expects will create about 200 jobs and contribute about $150 million to the economy.
- Following a new agreement between Ottawa and Nova Scotia signed in late March to streamline environmental approvals, the company secured industrial authorization earlier this month to process ore over 14 months.
- Despite opposition from the Ecology Action Centre regarding environmental risks, the province holds a $79.9-million bond to ensure the company completes all required reclamation under the Environment Act.
