Northern Lights Forecast: 9 States Might View Aurora Borealis Tonight
Incoming solar eruptions trigger geomagnetic storms expected to produce auroras in 15 U.S. states with moderate activity forecast for Nov. 11-12, NOAA said.
- On November 10, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warned incoming coronal mass ejections may spark geomagnetic storms producing auroras from November 10 until November 12 across New York, Minnesota, Iowa and Alaska.
- Over the last 24 hours forecasters recorded the sun emitting one X-class solar flare, two M-class flares, and numerous smaller flares that launched coronal mass ejections .
- NOAA's watches show a G2 watch for Nov.11, a rare G4 severe watch for Nov.12, and a G3 watch for Nov.13, with lights visible between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. ET and peak viewing from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m.
- NOAA advises letting your eyes adjust at least 30 minutes, finding a north-facing vantage point, avoiding light pollution, and using phone cameras, but cloud cover and timing may limit visibility.
- NOAA noted watches at this level are very rare; still, this is the fourth G4 Watch issued so far this solar cycle, with last year's powerful event and CMEs possibly extending activity into midweek.
