Multiple Solar Eruptions Could Spark Auroras Across the Northern US Starting Tonight
Scientists say the storm could reach G2 levels and push the aurora farther south, giving millions a chance to see it from home.
- The Space Weather Prediction Center forecasts a geomagnetic storm beginning around 11 p.m. ET on Thursday, Oct. 8, offering residents across up to 22 states a genuine chance to witness the northern lights.
- A coronal mass ejection departed the sun on Tuesday, sending a burst of charged particles toward Earth that will ignite the aurora borealis upon striking the atmosphere.
- Stargazers should escape city light pollution by traveling to dark, rural areas and use a smartphone's Night Mode to capture the faint green and purple hues often missed by the naked eye.
- Scientists expect an even stronger peak in activity around 5 a.m. ET on Friday, Oct. 9, though Vincent Ledvina, a space physics Ph.D. student known as the Aurora Guy, cautioned the event may be a "glancing blow."
- Past Solar Maximum, the peak of the sun's roughly 11-year activity cycle, opportunities to view the aurora should become less frequent as solar activity gradually declines over the coming years.
