Tradition of Test Cricket Revived in Vernon
The match ended in a draw and Vernon business owner Gayan Gamage earned the Most Valuable Player award.
The North Okanagan Cricket Club hosted the Shaheen Cricket Club of Calgary for a two-day Test match at DND Fields on Oct. 3 and 4, reviving a traditional format steeped in cricket's history.
Unlike limited-overs games, Test cricket is played over multiple days, emphasizing endurance and strategy while requiring players to wear traditional white uniforms as part of the sport's oldest tradition.
The City of Vernon provided a dedicated cricket field, which Captain Nuwan Thalgaswatte credited as transforming the club's ability to develop players following its fifth-place finish in the Interior BC Elite Cricket League.
After two days of play, the match concluded in a draw, a result Thalgaswatte called "a proud moment for cricket in the Okanagan," while Vernon business owner Gayan Gamage earned the Most Valuable Player award.
Organizers plan to make this two-day match an annual fixture with Shaheen expected to return, continuing to strengthen cricketing ties between Alberta and British Columbia while promoting sport tourism.
