North Korean POWs in Ukraine seeking 'new life' in South

Two North Korean POWs held by Ukraine seek asylum in South Korea to avoid forcible return, which activists warn could be fatal, according to a letter seen by AFP.

  • On Dec 24, AFP saw a letter in which two North Korean prisoners of war held by Kyiv since January asked to begin new lives in South Korea.
  • Fearing severe punishment if repatriated, the men described witnessing comrades kill themselves, Mr Yu Yong-weon said, warning that returning them would be `a death sentence`; South Korea's intelligence service says North Korean soldiers are instructed to kill themselves rather than be taken prisoner.
  • Delivered during a documentary interview coordinated by Gyeore-eol Nation United, the signed letter dated late October thanked South Korean supporters and withheld the two soldiers' names for safety.
  • South Korea's Foreign Ministry urged Ukraine not to forcibly repatriate North Korean POWs and to respect their wishes, citing South Korea's constitution that treats all Koreans as citizens.
  • Analysts say North Korea sent thousands of troops to support Russia, while South Korean estimates report at least 600 dead and thousands wounded in the conflict.
