Eagles Lose Edge Nolan Smith to Concussion
Philadelphia lost another edge rusher in the first half after Nolan Smith went down on a pass rush and was quickly ruled out with a concussion.
On Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles ruled edge rusher Nolan Smith out against the Carolina Panthers after he sustained a concussion in the second quarter. Smith suffered helmet-to-helmet contact with running back Chuba Hubbard during a pass rush.
The Eagles were already down a pair of edge rushers, with A.J. Epenesa and Jalyx Hunt inactive before Smith's exit. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio faced limited options to pressure Panthers quarterback Bryce Young with the depleted roster.
Before the injury, Smith recorded a first-half sack, his third of the season. The 25-year-old 2023 first-round draft pick has started 22 of 45 games while recording 10.5 career sacks over three seasons.
Following Smith's departure, the Eagles' remaining healthy edge rushers are Jonathan Greenard, Arnold Ebiketie, and practice-squad elevation Keyshawn James-Newby. This shortage creates challenges for a team already navigating extensive injury issues.
Back-to-Back NFC East duels against the Cowboys and Giants await the Eagles before their bye week. These matchups arrive amid a series of injury-related setbacks that have decimated the roster.
