No injuries after military chopper damaged in night landing on Canadian navy ship
A flight safety report says the helicopter’s two main rotor blades struck its tail boom, forcing an emergency shutdown and safe crew escape.
On Oct. 6, 2026, a CH-148 Cyclone helicopter sustained very serious damage while landing on the HMCS Ville in the Norwegian Sea. All four crew members escaped injury.
The helicopter, with the call sign Avalanche, was conducting night operations as part of Operation Reassurance, a NATO mission supporting collective defence in European waters.
During the final landing sequence, main rotor blades clipped the tail boom, severing multiple components; the four crew members performed an emergency engine shutdown after landing in the Beartrap.
Investigators have identified no technical issues "to date," though the ongoing investigation continues to focus on material, systems, environmental, and human factors.
This incident follows a separate Oct. 26 power-loss event in Vancouver that briefly grounded the $5.8-billion Cyclone fleet; officials determined that issue was not fleet-wide.
