Power Outage: NNPCL, Grid Operator Trade Blames While Nigerians Sleep in Darkness

NNPC said its gas transport network remains available and called for a joint review after NISO blamed limited gas and lower hydro inflows.

  • On Saturday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited dismissed claims that its gas transportation network caused the nationwide decline in electricity generation. "Pipelines remain available to deliver gas to power plants nationwide," the company stated.
  • The Nigerian Independent System Operator attributed lower generation to limited gas availability on November 5, 2026. On Friday, Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe linked the outages to maintenance at Egbin Power Station.
  • Growth in gas production reached about 10 per cent in 2026, though Chief Corporate Communications Officer Andy Odeh argued that production, commercial arrangements, and deliveries must be assessed separately from infrastructure availability.
  • To resolve these persistent shortages, the company called for a coordinated review of operational data by gas suppliers, transporters, power generating stations, and NISO to identify specific constraints and guide appropriate interventions.
  • Electricity supply across major cities like Lagos and Abuja has declined, placing pressure on businesses. "Gas-fired plants are a main source of Nigeria's grid power," the report noted.
