Nine Zamfara Assembly Members Defect From APC
Assembly leaders said the lawmakers were suspended for gross misconduct and face criminal complaints after allegedly forcing entry into offices and holding an unauthorized sitting.
- Nine members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly defected from the All Progressives Congress , citing disagreements over insecurity and lack of concern for people's welfare; Aliyu Ango Kagara of Talata Mafara South Constituency is among the defectors.
- Rt Hon Bilyaminu Ismail Moriki, Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, clarified that these lawmakers were suspended on February 26, 2024, long before their recent defection, following allegations of gross misconduct and illegal sittings.
- Kagara alleged their suspension stemmed from raising security issues on the Assembly floor, while the House accused them of burglary, forcible entry, and destruction of public property; a criminal complaint was instituted against the suspended lawmakers.
- Dismissing claims of instability, Moriki stressed that the Assembly remains functional with 16 active members and continues to conduct proceedings in accordance with the Constitution and its Standing Orders.
- The Speaker urged the public to distinguish between the political choices of the suspended members and ongoing disciplinary proceedings, maintaining that changing party platforms does not invalidate pending legal matters arising from alleged misconduct.
