Defending MVP Breaks All-Time Points Record in Utah
Kucherov reached 1,138 career points on a power-play assist as the Lightning’s all-time marks kept growing.
On Saturday in Salt Lake City, Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Nikita Kucherov became the franchise's all-time points leader with an assist on center Brayden Point's first-period power play goal, reaching 1,138 career points against the Utah Mammoth.
Stamkos, the team's longtime captain who spent 16 seasons in Tampa Bay, previously held the franchise record with 1,137 points over 1,082 games. The duo played 604 games together and won back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021.
Lightning coach Jon Cooper called Kucherov "arguably the smartest player I've ever coached," noting his uncanny mastery of skill and deception. Kucherov has earned two MVP awards and three Art-Ross Trophies throughout his elite career.
Mammoth defenseman Mikhail Sergachev, who played seven seasons with Kucherov, praised his former teammate's intense preparation and study habits. Kucherov now holds 17 league-recognized franchise records, cementing his legacy as one of hockey's elite playmakers.
Since scoring his first career point in 2013 against Hall of Famer Henrik Lundqvist, the 33-year-old winger has been central to the Lightning's success for over a decade. His elite vision and playmaking position him among the franchise's greatest players.
