Nike Unveils Robotic-Powered Footwear System for Everyone
Project Amplify uses robotics to boost running efficiency for athletes pacing 10 to 12 minutes per mile, tested with over 400 athletes covering 2.4 million steps, Nike said.
- Nike unveiled Project Amplify on Thursday as the world's first powered footwear system, saying it targets everyday athletes and compares the technology to an electric bike for walking and running.
- Developed with robotics partner Dephy, Nike Sport Research Lab tested Project Amplify with more than 400 athletes covering over 2.4 million steps, and plans a consumer launch in the coming years.
- Technically, the system integrates a motor, drive belt and rechargeable cuff battery into a carbon fiber-plated running shoe and resembles an ankle brace that aids natural lower leg and ankle movement.
- Designed for athletes running at a roughly 10 to 12-minute mile pace, Nike says some testers improved from a 12-minute mile to a 10-minute mile while using Project Amplify.
- Smaller and potentially less expensive, Project Amplify is a more polished design than earlier robotic footwear concepts including Dephy's Sidekick, but release timing remains uncertain for consumers.
