NCAA Gives Update on Aviation Unions Strike
The regulator said airlines will repay old Ticket Sales Charge debt in instalments after unions issued a three-day strike notice.
- On Tuesday, aviation unions continued industrial action at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja and Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal in Lagos, forcing airlines to suspend or reschedule services for stranded passengers.
- The Air Transport Service Senior Staff Association and the National Union of Air Transport Employees initiated action over workers' freedom to unionize and the alleged non-remittance of the 5% Ticket Sales Charge .
- Air Peace, Enugu Air, and United Nigeria Airlines suspended flights after union members barricaded departure terminals, preventing staff access and forcing network adjustments to prioritize passenger and crew safety.
- Director General Captain Chris Najomo of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority appealed to unions to "sheathe their swords," assuring the public the authority is resolving the dispute once Minister Festus Keyamo returns from abroad.
- While airlines previously agreed to pay debts in installments following a 30% waiver, the regulator noted that a meeting convened by the Honourable Minister last week failed because operators did not attend.
