Many communities in Plateau, Katsina and Kano states have been hit by diphtheria outbreaks as the authorities battle to halt the spread of the infection, which has claimed several lives and sickened many others.
The death toll from diphtheria in Nigeria's Plateau state has risen to 23.
The epidemic of diphtheria continues to progress in Senegal. As of 2 September 2026, seven health districts are now affected by the disease: Kedougou, Saraya, Mbour, Salemata, Guédiawaye, Kebémer and Touba.
