By reawarding to two public companies the permits previously held by Orano and Goviex, Niamey accelerates its policy of mining sovereignty. However, these decisions take place while several arbitral proceedings are still ongoing.
On Friday 21 August 2026, the Nigerian government granted two permits for uranium mining to national companies. The decision was taken by the Council of Ministers meeting in Niamey, under the chairmanship of General Abdourahamane Tiani Army. The first permit, called "In Azaoua", was granted to the Teloua Safeguarding Uranium Society.
Niger puts Somaïr uranium mining in state hands
NIGER has granted a large-scale uranium-mining permit – previously held by French nuclear company Orano SA – to state-controlled Tsumco SA, Bloomberg reported. Tsumco is the company Niger created after nationalising Somaïr, according to minutes from a cabinet meeting on Friday.
