NiDCOM says the order could affect 57 Nigerian professionals and urges talks with Gambian authorities over the planned staffing changes.
On November 3, NiDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa urged the Central Bank of The Gambia to reverse a directive requiring banks to replace all non-Gambian staff by December 31, 2026.
The Central Bank issued the directive on September 16, citing an industry study claiming non-Gambian employment in banks violated The Gambia's Labour Act 2023 and Guideline 9.
Dabiri-Erewa said the policy threatens 57 Nigerian professionals at four Nigerian-origin banks including Access Bank, FirstBank, Guaranty Trust Bank, and Zenith Bank, all holding valid residency and work permits.
These four banks control 37.2 per cent of total deposits valued at GMD35.3 billion and 32.6 per cent of loans, raising concerns about regional economic stability and cooperation.
NiDCOM urged the regulator to engage the Nigerian High Commission in Banjul, emphasizing that policies must balance local workforce development with African solidarity and existing employment arrangements.
