Nicola Sturgeon’s Statement to Police Will Not Be Released, Lawyer Says
Aamer Anwar said Sturgeon’s detailed statement was for Police Scotland only, as calls grow for transparency after Peter Murrell’s embezzlement case.
On Monday, lawyer Aamer Anwar confirmed that former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will not release her written police statement or interview from the Operation Branchform investigation.
After being arrested in June 2023 as part of Operation Branchform, Sturgeon exercised her right to give a 'no comment' interview before submitting a detailed written statement to officers.
The investigation led to the conviction of her estranged husband, Peter Murrell, who was jailed for five years after admitting he embezzled over £400,000 of SNP funds.
Scottish Conservative deputy leader Rachael Hamilton MSP criticized the decision, arguing Sturgeon previously said she would publish the document, fueling suspicion about what she knew.
Prosecutors confirmed in March 2025 that no further action would be taken against Sturgeon, yet opponents continue calling for a robust independent inquiry to restore public trust in politics.
