NIBS Releases 2025 Moving Forward Report: A Call to Retrofit for Resilience
On June 2, 2025, the National Institute of Building Sciences' Consultative Council published its 2025 Moving Forward Report in Washington, focusing on the impacts of extreme weather events across the United States.
This report responds to rising financial and human losses caused by hurricanes, wildfires, and storms, which have produced nearly $3 trillion in damages since 1980.
It urges immediate action to retrofit buildings and infrastructure, promote public-private partnerships, and invest in resilient technology, tax incentives, and education.
The 2019 study by NIBS Mitigation Saves reveals that every dollar invested in resilience measures can result in up to thirteen dollars saved by reducing disaster-related damages.
The report’s recommended measures aim to protect communities, reduce insurance claims, lower government emergency costs, and increase safety nationwide according to NIBS CEO George Guszcza.
