Arrests of illegal migrant workers increase by 51% in year since Labour elected
The UK government arrested 6,410 people on suspicion of illegal working from July 5, 2024, to May 31, 2025, marking a major crackdown across the country.
This surge followed Labour’s election victory and is driven by the Plan for Change, which prioritizes tougher laws and increased enforcement against illegal working.
Operations targeted sectors like restaurants, nail bars, construction, and gig economy workplaces, resulting in 1,477 visits and 1,057 arrests in one period, with notable raids across locations including Anglesey and Surrey.
Dame Angela Eagle emphasized that illegal employment in the UK will be firmly opposed, while enforcement director Montgomery highlighted the importance of addressing unlawful work to hold offenders accountable and protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
The government is expanding right-to-work checks to sectors like food delivery and beauty salons, aiming to reduce illegal employment and enforce immigration rules more effectively.
