NHL Rumors Roundup: Hellebuyck to Rangers After Shesterkin's Season-Ending Injury? Red Wings Demand "Top End" Return for Edvinsson & More
Veteran Spencer Martin is expected to fill in behind rookie Dylan Garand as the Rangers manage injuries to both of their top goalies.
- On October 10, the New York Rangers confirmed that star goaltender Igor Shesterkin will miss the remainder of the 2026-27 season following a severe lower-body injury sustained against the Washington Capitals.
- Shesterkin left the game against the Capitals on October 10 with an apparent lower-body injury, requiring assistance off the ice. Head coach Mike Sullivan stated, "I am disappointed for him because he is such a fierce competitor."
- To address the vacancy, the Rangers are expected to recall 31-year-old Spencer Martin on October 11 to serve as backup to Dylan Garand. The team currently sits second in the Metropolitan Division at 4-2.
- While rumors link the club to goalies like Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets, team officials are not rushing into a deal. General manager Chris Drury has "plenty of runway" to evaluate options.
- The organization appears calm despite the setback, with no immediate panic regarding roster moves. With the majority of the season remaining, management aims to assess Garand's performance before determining if significant acquisitions are necessary.
