Newark mayor says ICE operation caused multi-vehicle crash with injuries
Three children in a ride-share were injured when ICE agents pursued a van that fled, leading to a multi-vehicle crash during a targeted arrest operation, officials said.
- On Wednesday in Newark, Mayor Ras Baraka said an ICE pursuit ended in a multi-vehicle crash at Clinton Avenue and 10th Street.
- In a DHS statement, federal officials said the crash occurred during a targeted operation to arrest Christian Oswaldo Guevara-Guerra, and after a head-on collision, Guevara was taken into ICE custody while three children were hospitalized.
- Emanuel Miranda, Newark Public Safety Director, said three minors were taken to University Hospital after a van struck two vehicles at 8:20 a.m.
- City officials said Newark police responded only after the crash and that ICE's pursuit should follow state law restricting chases unless there's an imminent threat, Baraka said.
