Fans React to Stephen Colbert’s Final Show
A few dozen fans, security guards and reporters gathered for the farewell as CBS ended the 11-year run amid questions over the cancellation.
On Thursday, May 21, Stephen Colbert taped his final episode of "The Late Show" at New York's Ed Sullivan Theater as fans gathered outside in the drizzle to pay their respects.
CBS parent Paramount canceled the program last year citing financial concerns, though viewers suspect the decision stemmed from Colbert's decade of deriding President Trump.
Musician Paul McCartney, 83, made a surprise appearance for the finale, while fans hoisted signs reading "Thank You Stephen" and the episode ran 19 minutes longer than usual.
Fans lingered at the stage door after the final taping, expressing sadness as the 11-year run on CBS ended on a "muted note of melancholy." Celebrities took to social media with congratulations.
Paramount is currently selling real estate assets, including Television City in Los Angeles, leaving the future of the landmarked Ed Sullivan Theater uncertain amid the company's portfolio restructuring.
