New York police arrest man following motel fire that killed 6 and displaced dozens
Investigators say the blaze was intentionally set and displaced 73 residents, while the Red Cross opened a temporary shelter for survivors.
On Monday, June 22, 2026, a fire at the Knights Inn in Endwell killed six people and displaced dozens of residents, prompting a large-scale emergency response from 10 fire departments.
Authorities charged 24-year-old Tyler J. Russell with six counts of second-degree manslaughter and one count of fourth-degree arson after investigators determined the fire involved human factors and eliminated electrical or natural causes.
Broome County officials identified the six victims on Thursday, including 58-year-old Michelle Woolfork on the first floor and a family of five: Josh Molyneaux, Domonique Cruz-Champion, and their three children.
The American Red Cross established a temporary shelter at Vestal United Methodist Church for displaced residents, while the United Way of Broome County raised nearly $25,000 in emergency relief funds.
County Executive Jason Garnar had previously announced plans to discontinue using motels as shelters due to safety concerns, though advocates now call for rent freezes and systemic housing reform beyond temporary solutions.
