New York planning first large US nuclear plant in years: Hochul

UPSTATE NEW YORK, JUN 23 – The advanced nuclear plant aims to power 1 million homes, create over 2,800 jobs, and support New York's clean energy and grid reliability goals, officials said.

  • Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Monday that New York will build its first new nuclear power plant in more than 15 years upstate, generating at least 1 gigawatt.
  • The announcement follows concerns over growing electricity demand and an emerging power-production gap due to fossil fuel shutdowns and delayed nuclear projects nationwide.
  • Site selection and development for the new plant will be overseen by the New York Power Authority in collaboration with private partners, with plans to implement advanced, safer nuclear technology already in use in Europe and several U.S. states.
  • Hochul said the project would create 1,600 construction jobs and 1,200 permanent jobs, adding, "It’s clean, it’s affordable, it’s reliable," and serves innovation industries needing steady power.
  • While no exact timeline exists and costs could exceed initial estimates, the project may advance New York’s clean energy goals and reduce reliance on fossil fuels amid regulatory challenges.
