MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NEW YORK CITY, JUL 28 – Shane Tamura, with a history of mental illness, killed four including an off-duty NYPD officer before taking his own life in a Midtown Manhattan office tower, police said.
- Monday evening, Shane Devon Tamura, 27-year-old Las Vegas resident, entered 345 Park Avenue armed with an assault weapon, killing three people and injuring one before shooting himself.
- According to police, Shane Devon Tamura had a documented history of mental illness and traveled from Las Vegas, passing through Colorado on July 26, Nebraska and Iowa on July 27, and New Jersey on July 28.
- Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant and security guard, is survived by his wife, who is over 70% pregnant, and their two young sons, Commissioner Jessica Tisch called him `a hero`.
- Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch declared the shooter acted alone and posed no further threat, after nearby streets and offices were locked down and workers evacuated.
- Mayor Eric Adams warned that gun violence in the United States highlights how easy it is to access guns, with 254 mass shootings this week, and Islam underscores risks faced by police and first responders.
