New York mayor urged to ban Newsmax from taxi TVs

Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal called for suspending the Taxi and Limousine Commission's deal with Curb to remove Newsmax, citing misinformation concerns.

  • In a Jan. 21 letter, Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Signal urged Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the Taxi and Limousine Commission to remove Newsmax from thousands of cabs and suspend its partnership with Curb until it ends its arrangement with Newsmax.
  • Because Curb rolled out Newsmax clips late last year, Hoylman-Signal said Newsmax should not be aired due to `politically charged content` and a record of misinformation.
  • Curb began streaming one-minute Newsmax segments last year via its Journey Connect product, using QR codes linking to the Newsmax app in more than 15,000 taxis nationwide with over 2.3 billion impressions.
  • Newsmax responded that the letter was `an act of censorship` and said it was an attempt to silence a network watched by more than 50 million Americans, but the mayor had not publicly replied as of Friday.
  • Because the TLC issues licenses, it holds regulatory leverage over New York City taxis, and Curb’s ad partnership affects cab operators and medallion owners financially.
