Crews are responding to four new fires as winds drive rapid growth, and nearly 1,000 properties remain under an evacuation order, officials said.
- On Aug. 1, the Wait Creek Wildfire prompted an evacuation order for nearly 1,000 properties in Ta Ta Creek and Wasa east of Kimberley in the East Kootenay, with tactical evacuations initiated for residents closest to the fire.
- A severe wind storm on Aug. 1 fueled rapid fire growth, causing the Regional District of East Kootenay to initiate tactical evacuations as the fire grew aggressively beyond 160 hectares.
- Emergency crews opened a Reception Centre at Parkland Middle School, 1115 2 Ave S in Cranbrook, for evacuees; sections of Highway 95A and Highway 93/95 remain closed due to the active fire.
- As of Sunday, Aug. 2, the RDEK partially downgraded the evacuation order to an alert for Wasa and Lazy Lake as cooler temperatures and lighter winds enabled direct suppression tactics.
- Ongoing support for Ta Ta Creek evacuees continues through the Salvation Army, though officials advise residents who returned to Wasa and Lazy Lake to remain prepared to leave on a moment's notice should conditions shift.
