A Turkish court has ordered the arrest of Beyoğlu Mayor İnan Güney and 16 others on charges of fraud and membership in a criminal organization, marking the latest escalation in a yearlong crackdown on the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), the Anka news agency reported in the early hours of Tuesday.
Beyoğlu Mayor İnan Güney, who was detained as part of the corruption investigation targeting the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), was arrested by the court to which he was brought.
In the corruption investigation targeting the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), 20 suspects, including Beyoğlu Mayor İnan Güney, were referred to a judge with an arrest warrant. 24 suspects were released on probation.
