New US team launch America's Cup challenge led by veteran Read
Ken Read will lead the team, which acquired American Magic assets and aims to expand youth and female sailing pathways, organizers said.
- On Wednesday, American Racing Challenger Team USA was confirmed as an official challenger for the Louis Vuitton 38th America's Cup, representing the Challenging Yacht Club Sail Newport and ending uncertainty over U.S. participation.
- Uncertainty regarding American entry arose after American Magic decided last year not to stage another campaign, followed by Riptide Racing dropping plans last week to challenge for the "Auld Mug."
- Led by CEO and yachtsman Ken Read, the team acquired the AC75 "Patriot" and two AC40 platforms from American Magic to mount a competitive challenge.
- Governing body US Sailing will partner with the team to strengthen pathways into the sport, joining a competitive fleet that includes boats from Britain, Italy, Switzerland, and France.
- The competition will unfold in Naples in 2027, positioning the team to build on the United States' historic 132-year winning streak from 1851 through 1983.
