New Research Identifies the Next Wave of Home Painting Projects
The study says 60% of homeowners used or plan to use a recent project, with bold paint colors and smaller-space updates gaining ground.
The 2027 FrogTape Paint Project Index identifies a significant shift in home design, as homeowners increasingly view every room element—from architectural details to ceilings and small spaces—as a design opportunity.
Nearly 42% of homeowners plan to transform small, overlooked spaces like laundry rooms and powder rooms with bold paint in the next year, as 60% say vibrant color turns purely functional areas into high-impact design features.
Colorful trim and doors top project lists at 54%, yet precision remains challenging; 97% of DIYers use painter's tape, while only 21% feel completely confident achieving professional-looking lines on complex designs.
Homeowners are also refreshing cabinets and built-ins to personalize their kitchens without full renovations, with 43% citing creativity as motivation and 25% seeking to save money versus hiring contractors.
"Making a painting project feel personal goes well beyond choosing wall color," said Melanie Canning, director of Insights for FrogTape, as 31% of homeowners cite refreshing room energy without painting entire walls.
