New Prime Minister Will Not ‘Change UK-Ukraine Dynamic’, Keir Starmer Vows
The package would support about 5,000 UK jobs and modernize Ukraine’s air force as Russian strikes on Kyiv intensify, officials said.
- On Thursday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged €300 million to deliver 16 advanced Swedish Gripen jets to Ukraine by 2029 during his final visit to Kyiv, just hours after Russian strikes killed two and injured six.
- Starmer's commitment deepened after traveling to Paris on Monday for a coalition of the willing meeting where he announced the UK would join the EU's €90 billion loan to Kyiv, capping a tenure marked by a 100-year partnership with Ukraine.
- The Gripen programme will support approximately 5,000 jobs across more than 50 UK defence companies including Saab UK in Fareham and Leonardo UK in Edinburgh, with training for Ukrainian pilots and engineers included alongside Sweden's donation of up to 16 older Gripen C/D aircraft.
- At a press conference at Zelensky's official ceremonial residence, Starmer stated "The resolve of the United Kingdom remains the same, it will not waver," as Zelensky expressed hope to build "new strong relations" with the incoming prime minister and requested a meeting "as soon as possible."
- The Gripen aircraft will help modernize Ukraine's air force as it faces ongoing Russian attacks, operating alongside existing F-16 and Mirage fighters, while Andy Burnham takes over Labour leadership Friday before entering Downing Street Monday.
