New national law will turn large parking lots into solar power farms
The law mandates solar canopies for parking lots with over 80 spaces to boost renewable energy and create jobs, using idle land efficiently, officials said.
- Starting this month, parking lots in South Korea with more than 80 spaces must install solar canopies and carports, covering both publicly- and privately-owned lots and existing sites.
- South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said in August that it prepared an amendment to the Enforcement Decree to require panels on idle parking lots and expand renewable energy distribution.
- Protecting vehicles from heavy weather, the solar canopies and carports will shield Korean drivers’ vehicles from rain, snow and sun, reducing interior heat and preserving EV and PHEV battery range.
- Approved in late September, the rule is expected to go into effect later this month, with installation projects set to begin immediately and officials saying the rollout will create solar and construction jobs and stabilize the local grid.
- As other cities experiment, scalable examples include New York freeing 400 million square feet and Arizona's 657 kW system delivering more than 1.23 million kWh annually, offsetting 185,000 vehicles.
